Advantage West Midlands has been managed by a non-executive Board of 15 made up of a strong business representation alongside representatives from local authorities, HE/FE sector, unions and the BME community.  The Board has been responsible for determining the Agency's strategic direction.

The Chief Executive, as the head of the organisation, has worked to the Board and has also been the Agency's Accounting Officer.  The Chief Executive has been supported by a Leadership Team, comprising Corporate Directors responsible for leading the Agency's work in areas such as strategy, enterprise, innovation, skills, regeneration, communication and finance & resources.

At its height the Agency had a staff complement of around 350.  The majority have been based at its head office on Birmingham Science Park, Aston, with a small team operating in the rural west of the region from an office in Tenbury, Worcestershire.

In terms of its relationship to Government, the department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has been the "sponsor department" for all Regional Development Agencies - including Advantage West Midlands.

Since the announcement of the abolition of the RDA network in June 2010 Advantage West Midlands has focused on closing down in an exemplary manner, ensuring the best possible outcome for the region, BIS, and Agency staff.

A Closure and Transition Board was established, led by the Chief Executive, to plan and implement the controlled closure of the Agency. Staff were redeployed into new teams, to focus all available effort and resources on delivering closure objectives.

The work of the teams is managed by a Closure and Transition Board which reports into the Chief Executive.

The individual teams' activities have focused on cataloguing and transferring the Agency's physical and knowledge assets, transferring Agency functions to successor bodies and  delivering legally committed activities - such as "live" projects and on-going European funding programmes.
