Burslem Live Work

Burslem

Looking at Burslem’s vibrant live/work units, it’s difficult to imagine that this was once a collection of derelict Victorian terraces branded an ‘eye sore’ by locals.

Now an integral part in Burslem’s buzzing bohemian community, 7 – 15 Queen Street is a haven for North Staffordshire’s up and coming artists, film makers, illustrators, journalists and ceramists.

The popularity of the units is largely attributed to its unique design which allows creative space for entrepreneurs to live and work, and is also praised for its central location – being just a stone’s throw from Burslem’s High Street.

Young entrepreneur and award winning artist, Rob Pointon, is one of the latest residents to move into the scheme.

“The Live /Work Units were a factor in my decision to stay in the Stoke-on-Trent area instead of moving to Manchester or back to London – where I studied at art college,” said Rob.

“Centered at the heart of the growing art scene, the units provide an affordable rent and exude a great community spirit. They have also opened up more opportunities than I thought possible - particularly with regards to collaborative working with other creative residents.

“I have already worked on animated films with my flat mate and I’m also currently in discussions about starting up a small side line ceramics business with a potter who lives downstairs – which has already sparked interest with a number of ceramics collectors!”

The successful transformation of the Burslem Live/Work units was made possible by a joint funding venture with £1.6 million contribution from Advantage West Midlands through the North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership, and scheme managers Midland Heart.

The development was part of a wider £31 million programme of regeneration initiatives in the area designed to breathe new life into buildings, trigger business growth and boost the confidence and aspirations of young and old alike in the surrounding community.
